I read something recently from someone who admitted it had been a long time since they had personally led someone to Jesus.
And if I’m being truthful, it made me stop and think about myself.
I love Jesus. I talk about Him. I hope my life points people toward Him. But when I really thought about the last time I sat with someone and actually led them to Christ, I realized it’s been a while.
And I felt guilty about that.
But then I thought about what Paul said: “I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth.”
We don’t always know what part we’re playing in someone else’s story.
Maybe you’re the person who says something they remember six months from now. Maybe I’m the person who listens when they’re having a terrible day. Maybe you simply live your faith in front of someone long enough that they start asking questions. And maybe somebody else gets to be there for the moment they finally say yes to Jesus.
I don’t want to use that as an excuse to stay comfortable. Actually, maybe the fact that this bothered me says the opposite. I want to be paying closer attention to the people God puts in front of me.
But I also don’t think Jesus is asking us to keep a running total.
Maybe the question isn’t, “How long has it been since I led someone to Christ?”
Maybe it’s simply, “Am I available today?”
I can plant. I can water. I can be willing to listen.
God is the One who makes it grow. I don’t want to necessarily carry guilt for what only God can do. I just don’t want to miss the part He’s asking me to do.
