When I was a kid, I thought I had adulthood all figured out. I wanted to be a truck driver. Not because I had some lifelong dream of driving an eighteen-wheeler across the country. My reasoning was much simpler than that. I thought truck drivers got to travel and listen to music ALL DAY. What could be be better than that? Working at STAR I now do get to listen ALL DAY! I just figured my future would involve a big truck, turning up the radio, driving around and listen to music. Honestly, I thought my plan was guaranteed to make adulthood totally awesome!
Funny how little we actually understand about the future when we’re kids. Nobody told me about bills, mortgages, insurance, responsibilities or how many decisions you have to make as an adult. Nobody told me that sometimes you can work really hard and still not know exactly where you’re going or what you’re doing. And nobody told me that sometimes the life you end up living looks nothing like the life you imagined when you were young.
But maybe that’s where faith comes in. We’re not called to have our entire future figured out. We’re called to trust the One who does. God doesn’t ask us to understand everything. He asks us to trust Him. Think about how often we worry about things that haven’t happened yet. We wonder what’s going to happen with our kids, our marriage, our jobs, our health and our everything under the sun. We just want God to show us the entire road ahead, but most of the time, He doesn’t. He gives us enough light for the next step.
When I look back at my life, I’m actually thankful God didn’t give me everything I thought I wanted when I was a kid. He gave me things I never could have imagined. He gave me people I never knew I’d need. He opened doors I never knew existed, and He closed doors I thought I desperately needed to walk through. And through all of it, He was quietly leading me, even when I didn’t recognize it.
That’s the part of God’s faithfulness we sometimes miss. We look back and see the big moments, but God was there in all the little moments too. The disappointments, the opportunities, the unexpected blessings and even the times we thought we were lost. God was never lost. He knew exactly where we were.
Wherever you are today, trust Him with the road ahead. You don’t have to know every turn. You don’t have to have this thing called life all figured out. Just keep following Him. Keep praying. And let God take you places you never imagined going.
Because if I’ve learned anything since that little boy with a bowl cut and oversized front teeth who wanted to be a truck driver, it’s this: The life God has planned for you may look nothing like the life you planned for yourself. And that’s okay. God’s plans are better.

Normally that would make me feel better. But it seems I’ve totally failed at so much that matters so much. I just want peace, but there is none in any way, shape or form.
